Which properties make money easy to store and carry?

Card answer

Correct answer

Answer A: It should be durable and easy to transport.

Quick explanation

Durability and portability make money easier to use. These properties alone do not guarantee acceptance or a stable value.

Detailed explanation

A form of money is impractical if it spoils quickly, is easily destroyed or takes great effort to transport. Durability supports the store-of-value function: someone accepting money today must still be able to use it later. Portability supports the medium-of-exchange function by allowing value to move between people and places.

These properties differ across forms of money. Precious metals are durable, but large amounts are heavy and expensive to move. Cash can be handed over directly, but can be lost and is inconvenient over long distances. Bank balances can be transferred electronically but depend on technical and institutional systems. Digital forms of money can cover great distances quickly, but require secure networks and suitable devices.

Neither durability nor portability guarantees scarcity, stable purchasing power or free payments. They are individual criteria within a wider assessment of money.

Example or everyday application

Transporting a large payment in gold bars takes effort. A bank transfer can move the same nominal amount electronically. In return, the transfer depends on banks, accounts and functioning infrastructure.
